Humans and machines interact in the spaces where journalism is created and consumed more than ever. In this chapter, we explore how algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are shifting the boundaries of journalism in newsrooms and how best to examine this shift, using existing literature and data gleaned from interviews with Canadian newsworkers. The way the implementation of AI shapes how journalists perceive their roles and the challenges confronting them when performing their roles and interacting with nonhuman entities will be outlined. Theoretical frameworks within the field of human–machine communication and sociological research will be utilized to help establish the theoretical foundations required to analyze sociotechnical phenomena from an actor-oriented perspective. Moreover, this chapter will explore emerging professional cultures related to the use of algorithm-driven technology and AI in the field of journalism.
